Arthur Weiss, MD, PhD

Arthur Weiss, M.D., PhD is the Ephraim P. Engleman Distinguished Professor of Rheumatology in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and has been on the faculty there since 1985.  He served as Division Chief of Rheumatology at UCSF from 1988-2011 and served as Director of the Medical Scientist Training Program (2002-2006).  He was an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 1985 and retired from HHMI in 2022.

A graduate of Johns Hopkins University (‘73), Dr. Weiss received his MD (’79) and PhD (‘78) degrees at the University of Chicago.  He did his graduate training in the laboratory of Dr. Frank Fitch where he studied transplantation immunology.  After a brief postdoctoral fellowship at the Swiss Institute for Cancer Research in Lausanne, Switzerland, Dr. Weiss did his internship and residency in internal medicine at UCSF.  During his subspecialty training in rheumatology he worked in the laboratory of Dr. John Stobo where he began his work on characterizing the T cell receptor and its mechanism of signaling transduction.

Dr. Weiss is a leading researcher in the field of signal transduction in the immune system, focusing on the roles of tyrosine kinases and phosphatases in regulating T cell receptor signaling.  He has studied how abnormalities in tyrosine phosphorylation pathways lead to immunologically-mediated diseases.

Dr. Weiss is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.  He is a recipient of the Distinguished Investigator Award of the ACR, Arthritis Foundation’s Lee C. Howley Prize, the American Association of Immunologists Meritorious Career Award and the Cancer Research Institute’s William B Coley Award for Distinguished Research in Basic and Tumor Immunology.  He also received the UCSF Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award.

Dr. Weiss a co-founder and an advisor for Nurix Therapeutics.  He serves on the Scientific Advisory/Review Boards of BlueSphere Bio, BridGene Biosciences, Genentech, Imidomics, Jasper Therapeutics,
