Francesca Fallarino is a full professor at the University of Perugia. Her research interests are mainly focused on the field of immune tolerance. Her research made an important contribution to the field of immunoregulation and immunotolerance by providing evidence that regulatory dendritic cells can exert profound immunoregulatory effects. These findings expand scientific knowledge of the role of autotrophic amino acid pathways, such as that of the essential amino acid tryptophan, in immune responses. Indeed, metabolic factors of cells and microbiota can modulate immune responses in selected microenvironments and create different levels of ecosystems that can influence the functions of other immune ecosystems, leading to activation or regulation of immunity. Recently, her team discovered that different metabolites can also modulate the inflammatory functions of dendritic cells by activating specific metabolic sensors.

Francesca Fallarino has been invited to several international conferences and workshops. Francesca Fallarino has published more than 178 articles in extenso, appearing in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (USA) database. She is on the current Top Italian Scientists list.
